Jusay, J. (2020). The strange ones. Gallery13.
Summary
Anjeline and Franck are both loners in NYC. When fate literally pushes them together in a mosh pit at a concert, they connect and form a friendship that has them spending time together. This friendship helps each of them see the world a little bit different, brightens their lives just a little bit more. Set in the mid-90's, this graphic novel is about how the past can haunt you and how sometimes finding that right person can heal you.
A Teacher's Perspective
This was chosen from the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens list.
I'm not huge on graphic novels like this, but the story wasn't that bad. As a book reviewer, I'd probably be honest and say it wasn't my favorite, but as a teacher, I try to look at with the thought, "How would my students benefit from this?"
Honestly, I think seeing into the 90's is one option, but the best would be to know that the things in these characters' pasts don't prevent them from moving on, from healing, from forming friendships and making the world their own.
