Keats, E. (1976). The Snowy Day. Puffin Books.
Summary
The first in a series of books about a little boy named Peter, The Snowy Day is a wonderful introduction to his world. In this book, Peter is amazed at the wonders a beautiful first winter's snow can bring. From crunching footprints to snowball fights, Peter spends his day exploring his surroundings as they are covered with inches and inches of wonderful, white snow.
A Teacher's Perspective
I became interested in the history of this book and happened to learn of the EJK foundation. They said that before Keats, there weren't children's picture books with African-American 'heroes' in them. Keats made sure to illustrate the book as if he just simply belonged there, not as if he were a 'token black kid in a book'. I love this idea, and I think that the history of books like this should be explored more.
The wonderful illustration adds to the joy that the story brings, and readers of all ages can take a moment to appreciate the happiness that can be found in a snowy adventure.
