Stead, R. (2020). The List of Things That Will Not Change. Wendy Lamb Books.
Summary
When children experience divorce, they all cope differently. In this novel, Bea decides to keep a list of things that never change in order to help her understand her anxiety, her new role in life, and the changing relationships she sees around her. When her father decides to marry his boyfriend, Bea is excited about adding to her family. Readers experience Bea's interactions with friends, family, and new people with a lighthearted perspective, without the forlorn expression that typically surrounds these types of family issues.
A Teacher's Perspective
The best part about this novel is the tone that Stead takes on issues that children often do not understand how to cope with. This novel is precisely the type of read that middle-grade students should read in order to understand that they can form their own normal in situations beyond their control. The way it is written, Stead makes situations that are often misconstrued as everyday common occurrences and would give a new perspective to students who may not know how to deal with this experience.
