Ness, P. (2008). The knife of never letting go. Boston, MA: Candlewick Press
Summary
Where Todd lives, women don't exist and all the men have been infected with the Noise germ; everyone can hear each others thoughts. Todd is almost a man, which is a big deal since he is the last boy. One day, Todd and his dog are exploring and find one place where there is no "noise" to bother him. This is a major find, and his own 'noise' reveals this to the men raising him when he returns. They pack him off to another town, saying he cannot stay in his home anymore, when Todd and his dog find something not known to exist anymore; a girl. Confused, knowing that 'women were all killed off,' Todd finds out that everything he thought to be true was a lie, and that his town is harboring a dark secret that he must overcome.
A Teacher's Perspective
This book...this series... ten out of ten stars. HIGHLY recommend. I first read this novel (according to Goodreads) in August of 2014. I've never stopped thinking about it. I am constantly recommending it to my students because the physical writing style of this book is amazing. Not only is it chaotic like the series title suggests, but the markings on the pages to indicate the chaos of the 'noise' is so beautifully done. I have ONE issue with this book...and if you know, you know (so when you actually do read it, you can come back and we can cry together), but the action, adventure, deception, confusion, and intensity of this book is such a driving point that readers are hooked from the very beginning.
