The Grouchy Ladybug

Carle, E. (1977). The Grouchy Ladybug. Harper Collins.

Summary

'Pick on someone your own size' isn't really something the ladybug in this story learns. From beginning to end, she tries to find someone big enough to fight because she is so grouchy. By the end of the book, readers learn that apparently no one is big enough for this grouchy ladybug, and she returns to her original place on the aphid filled leaf, tired, wet, and extremely hungry. Perhaps by the end she's learned to be a little less grouchy, but for now, she enjoys a nice dinner of aphids and ends up helping the leaves out instead of fighting.

A Teacher's Perspective

Eric Carle always brings beautiful illustrations and lovely books to any reader. This one in particular has various page sizes to show that the ladybug tries to fight bigger and bigger creatures. The fun part includes a whale that lasts around 8 pages, emphasizing his large size. In the top of each left page corner, readers are greeted with an image of a clock to show time spent finding someone to fight, and by the end of her day, the ladybug is exhausted. This book is great for imagery, and a wonderful addition to any Carle collection.
