Reynolds, J. (2020). Stamped. Little, Brown Books.
Summary
This is not a history book. This is a part of, and a recollection of history. The history of Racism. The origin story of American racism and what Reynolds refers to as the "first racist" is brought to the forefront through wit and a conversational writing style. Addressing the political, literary, and philosophical ideals that 'justify' racism in the country, Reynolds shows how the "'construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, whether financially or politically,' and that this power has been used to systemically and systematically oppress Black people in the United States for more than four hundred years." (Goodreads).
A Teacher's Perspective
I ended up purchasing my own copy of this book, even after I checked it out from the local library. I want it in my classroom. I teach at a predominantly white school, but we have African-American students. I don't want them lost, forgotten, ignored, mistreated, bullied... I want my students aware. I want them to understand that this isn't okay, that the ideologies that have been passed down to them that says "you're not a racist, but..." isn't okay, but to also understand WHERE it came from.
Reynolds claims it isn't a history book, but it will go down in history.
