Snapdragon

Leyh, K. (2020) Snapdragon. First Second Books.

Summary

Snapdragon, or Snap, decides to be friends with the town witch, Jacks. In her black trenchcoat, Jacks likes to gather roadkill, clean it up, and sell it. Snapdragon brings a box of orphaned raccoons to her new friend, and they form a relationship that teaches Snap about herself. This magical tale of friendship, family, and acceptance will have readers turning page after page, eager to know what Snap will do next.

A Teacher's Perspective

I chose this from the YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Readers list. I love the inclusivity of the LGBTQ community, as it has a transgender character (no spoilers) and an accepting family. Snapdragon is a misunderstood character who in reality is quite charming, and Jacks is so interesting.

A quick and easy read, it simply had me turning page after page. I want to eventually purchase this for my classroom library, so my kids can see such wonderful artistry and a brilliant story.
