Learn YA Lit with Me (Ch.19)

The one where Ms. Shattuck learns "what real reader advocates do to 'find a good book'."

I'm taking a class on Young Adult literature this semester at SHSU and am required to blog about each chapter that I read, so I thought I'd create a series to share with my blog friends. Welcome to Chapter 19.

Summary:

This chapter takes you to a website about reading advocates and shows how to help readers find a "good book." The article basically takes you through the RA interview process by explaining that it is the RA's responsibility to know HOW to get the reader to hand over the information needed in order to help them.

It goes on to give ideas as to how an RA can ask a set of questions to find what the reader is interested in, then breaks it down into direct and indirect RA techniques. The article ends with a summary to close out the 'interview' process.

Reflection:

This article is almost a simplification of the textbook RA Interview process from previous classes I have taken with SHSU's LSSL program. It simplifies some of the more difficult parts, but honestly is only really helpful if the Library Science student isn't an avid reader. Avid readers understand reading appeal and know how to search out those types of questions because they love to recommend books to people who never asked for recommendations (ha).
