Learn YA Lit with Me (Ch.13)

The one where Ms. Shattuck learns about "Sci-Fi and Fantasy."

I'm taking a class on Young Adult literature this semester at SHSU and am required to blog about each chapter that I read, so I thought I'd create a series to share with my blog friends. Welcome to Chapter 13.

Summary:

Science fiction falls within the fantasy category. According to this chapter, all science fiction is fantasy, but not all fantasy is science fiction. Sci-fi is a subgenre of Fantasy. Sci-fi and Fantasy stories include anything that doesn't fall under the physical reality of our time.

Criteria for evaluating Nonfiction includes:

  • What are the fantasy aspects of the story--is it believable?

  • What are the fantasy rules?

  • Does the author help readers suspend disbelief

  • Do the themes explore universal truths.

Reflection:

I truly enjoyed the video by Dr. Karen Perry about the different sub-categories within the genre. I remember making a list of the books mentioned last semester, and I've purchased/read quite a few that then made their way to my student library in my classroom.
