Learn YA Lit with Me (Ch.12)

The one where Ms. Shattuck learns about "Nonfiction."

I'm taking a class on Young Adult literature this semester at SHSU and am required to blog about each chapter that I read, so I thought I'd create a series to share with my blog friends. Welcome to Chapter 12.

Summary:

Nonfiction texts include expository, biography, autobiography, and memoir. There isn't a specific template that nonfiction follows, but a variety of text can fall into this genre.

Criteria for evaluating Nonfiction includes:

  • Is the author qualified to write this?

  • Is it accurate?

  • What is the purpose?

  • Does the organization help readers?

  • Are there helpful visuals?

Reflection:

I love how this chapter offers questions to ask students about nonfiction. It is pulled from Carter and Abraham, and really haves students pay attention to the details within nonfiction. A lot of students struggle with nonfiction, and these questions really help guide them through and teaches them navigation. These questions are the most helpful part of the entire chapter.
