Learn YA Lit with Me (Ch.11)

The one where Ms. Shattuck learns about "Realistic Fiction."

I'm taking a class on Young Adult literature this semester at SHSU and am required to blog about each chapter that I read, so I thought I'd create a series to share with my blog friends. Welcome to Chapter 11.

Summary:

Chapter 11 explains that realistic fiction includes books set in modern times, are believable, and everything within the story is consistent with the real world.

There are 2 types of Realistic Fiction

  • CRF: Contemporary

  • MRF: Modern

Criteria for evaluating Realistic Fiction includes:

  • Consistency

  • Is the theme natural?

  • Is it relatable to modern readers?

Reflection:

This chapter is another familiar one from last semester. I know that realistic fiction is relatable to students--students tend to learn better from things they understand and don't need a lot of background information on. I do, however, feel that historical fiction teaches them more about the history of mankind. Realistic fiction allows for relatable moments.
