Garza, C. (2005). Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia. Children's Book Press

Summary

This beautiful, bilingual book of illustrations tells the story of Carmen growing up in Kingsville, Texas and wanting to be an artist. Through illustration, readers learn about Garza's working-class family, and what it was like to grow up in a Mexican-American lifestyle. The detail in each picture is accompanied by well written stories from her life, and Garza uses this platform to show the simplicity, yet beauty in the working-class life of her family.

A Teacher's Perspective

I spent a long time looking at the pictures in this book. There are so many things from Garza's culture that stick out, and so much that students can learn from the depiction of everyday life. I love that this book celebrates her culture, and would recommend it to any teacher that is wanting to expand her student's views on the typical "American Dream" that people seek. This book shows Garza's culture in both Spanish and English, and would be a great addition to a Spanish 1 class.
