Chin, J. (2011). Coral Reefs. Roaring Brook Press.
Summary
What better way to learn about a new subject than to immerse yourself completely in that world. From library shelf to bustling reef, the young girl in this book finds herself amazed by the facts she learns in Jason Chin's illustrations of aquatic life. By relaying the information with matching drawings, Chin's information comes to life on the page. Readers can watch the girl's surroundings transform into a beautiful ocean view full of coral, fish, predatory creatures, turtles, and even whales. A great resource for introducing kids of all ages to a coral reef.
A Teacher's Perspective
The beauty of this book not only comes with the illustrations, but in the way Chin relays information to the reader. As the girl is 'reading' about coral reefs, so is the actual reader. Her library transforms, and both she and the reader are able to understand the facts that Chin presents. The endpapers give sketches of aquatic life of all shapes and sizes. This is in conjunction with a page full of facts that Chin has collected for his book. He explains that he travelled to the great barrier reef for research, and the drawings he portrayed are of what he saw on his time there. This story is great for a science unit in the classroom, or just to give to students interested in aquatic life.
