Holm, J., & Holm, M. (2017). Comics Squad: Detention. Random House
Summary
Another adorable addition to the Comics Squad series, Detention consists of a variety of adventurous tales that take place during school. Many different students get themselves placed in detention for various reasons from angering the Greek god principal, to purposely trying to get sent in order to catch the eye of a cute guy. Each tale shares the range of emotions expected from kids who really do not want to be in the dreaded detention. From the editors of Babymouse and Lunchlady comes a collection of relatable incidents that will have even the most skilled reader cackling in their seat.
A Teacher's Perspective
This collection is quite adorable, and can entertain even my 8th grade students. I especially loved the Greek mythology tie in: Mr. Hades as the detention teacher, and the hilarious, "No one ever listens to Cassandra!" I had the pleasure of reading a library hardback, and it was well put together. Lunchlady and Babymouse are present throughout the book, which contains a "how to draw Lunchlady" and a mock advertisement to purchase sea monkey's from "the pond."
One thing I think is really wonderful about this collection is the style. Each story in the collection is listed in the table of contents, and the comic style changes when the stories end. Some are filled with onomatopoeia and the reader has to fill in the blanks. Others are full of action words, multiple speaking bubbles throughout the page, and even side commentary from other characters. I would definitely recommend this to my lower level readers in 8th grade, but it would be a fantastic series for a 4th/5th grader to enjoy.
